Natural Organic Lawn Maintenance Calendar

Use this organic lawn maintenance calendar to plan your chemical-free lawn care program. This is for cool season-grasses.



Early Spring (March)

  • Mulch mow leaves still on your lawn.
  • Begin regular mowing when grass resumes growth. Always mow high and mulch - return grass clippings to lawn.

Spring (April and May)

  • Apply corn gluten meal for pre-emergent weed control in early April. Apply at a rate of 20lbs per 1000 square feet.
  • Mow high and frequently - removing no more than 1/3 of growth.
  • Hand-pull weeds or spot treat with herbicidal soaps.
Summer (June and July)

  • Hand-pull weeds or spot treat with herbicidal soaps.
  • Water as needed.
  • Mow high and frequently.
  • Monitor for lawn insect pests.

Late Summer (August and September)

  • Hand-pull weeds or spot treat with herbicidal soaps.
  • Water as needed.
  • Mow high and frequently.
  • Have your soil tested (every two to three years).
  • Monitor for lawn insect pests.
  • Fertilize in September.
  • Aerify and overseed with high quality seed (late August - early September).
  • Corn gluten meal application for protection against winter annual weeds (only if you are not overseeding).

Fall (October)

  • Mow high and frequently.
  • Hand-pull weeds or spot treat with herbicidal soaps.
  • Water as needed.
  • Topdress with compost.
  • Mulch fallen leaves with mower.

Late Fall (November into December)

  • Continue to mow as long as the grass is growing.
  • Mulch fallen leaves with mower.
  • Apply late fall fertilizer.
